After confirming the material characteristics, such as density, hardness, Young’s modulus etc., all the performances are achieved through DIMENSIONS of the parts and assemblies in the production. The disciplinary approach to understanding product performance to the production variables allows us to make suitable plans for mass production.
“Translating the product design intent to a set of measurable dimensions for achieving performance” is the primary purpose of the DM function in a New Product Innovation Company.
Once we understand the relationships between bottom-level variables and top-level performances, production can estimate and maintain the PERFORMANCES instead of VARIABLES.

Current NPD processes encourage each department to focus on its value addition to the product, irrespective of the other departments. Even if the common interest of all stakeholders in the NPD process is achieving the final product performance, their contributions have not been measured in the same manner.
Once Performances are cascaded as Key characteristics (KC) of systems and sub-systems, designers focus on achieving local KC; similarly, once manufacturing receives part specifications, they focus on making individual parts as precise as possible irrespective of the final Performances.
At the end of development, the understanding of Performance achievement emerges again after testing the assembled products.
